The Annunciation is the First Joyful Mystery of the Holy Rosary. This meditation reflects on the moment the Archangel Gabriel announced to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive the Son of God, as recorded in the Gospel of Luke. It is a prayer focused on Mary's humble acceptance of God's will.
The meditation on the Annunciation is rooted directly in the Gospel of Luke (1:26-38). While this scene has been central to Christian devotion since the early Church, its inclusion as the first Joyful Mystery was formalized with the standardization of the Rosary by Pope St. Pius V in the 16th century. The Joyful Mysteries as a group focus on the Incarnation and the hidden life of Jesus Christ, beginning with this pivotal moment in salvation history.
The Annunciation marks the Incarnation, the moment the Word became flesh. Mary’s response, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord," is her fiat, or her free, total, and obedient "yes" to God's plan. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that through her obedience, she became the "New Eve" (CCC 494). By meditating on this mystery, the faithful learn to cultivate humility and an openness to divine will in their own lives.
The Joyful Mysteries, beginning with the Annunciation, are traditionally prayed on Mondays and Saturdays. They are also recommended during the liturgical seasons of Advent and Christmas. This mystery is particularly fitting when praying for the virtue of humility, for discernment of God's will, or on the Solemnity of the Annunciation (March 25). It is also a beautiful prayer for expectant mothers and for the protection of the unborn.
